Magistrates court fines Increase as much as four times

Fines in the magistrates court to increase as much as four times.

Guidance for criminal barristers and solicitors. New proposals introduced by the government are set to increase magistrates court fines.

Existing fines on the level 1 to level 4 will be quadrupled.

Fines a level 5 scale, which currently are set at £5000, will in most cases become unlimited fines.

The proposed changes would be felt most keenly in many regulatory offences and business offences.

Fines imposed will still be commensurate to a persons means. To take effect, the introduction of these changes, currently a statutory instrument, would require changes to the existing Magistrates Court Sentencing Guidelines.
